Root Prefix Suffix
รากศัพท์ (Root or Stem) เป็นส่วนที่แสดงถึงความหมายพื้นฐานหรือความหมายหลัก (Basic Meaning) ของคำ เมื่อเติม Prefix หรือ Suffix เข้าไปแล้วก็จะเป็นคำขึ้นมา โดยที่ความหมายของรากศัพท์ยังคงเดิมไม่เปลี่ยนความหมายไป รากศัพท์ (roots) เป็นส่วนที่เป็นฐานของคำและเป็นตัวหลักเพื่อสร้างคำอื่น ๆ เพิ่มขึ้น และรากศัพท์เป็นส่วนที่ไม่สามารถแยกออกจากกันได้อีก รากศัพท์อาจเกี่ยวข้องกับจำนวนเลข (Numbers) การวัด (Measurement) การเคลื่อนไหว (Motion) การกระทำ (Action) ความรู้สึก (Senses) คุณภาพ (Quality) กฎหมาย (Law) และสังคม (Social) ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้
